The original sale was that I'd go over some of his art and we'd figure out how to get a story out of it. The majority of the conversations that night were more than a little awkward as we were trying to get a bearing on where each other sat creatively.

Eventually,... it boiled down to one drawing that he was working on before I showed up. A drawing that's been driving me mad since.

The drawing was of a skeletal woman with stringy black hair hanging limp around her skull. Vacant spots suggesting a glow sank deep in the eye sockets. She was wrapped in a robe. And Catfish made it a point to tell me that he wasn't interested in getting too gorey with the whole thing.

"Shit!," I thought, "There went the cheap tricks."

There were a few other pre-requisites brought up, and things were starting to look a little bleak, until... Last night I got the bright idea to research something else that Catfish is obsessed with other than freaky ghost girls a la THE GRUDGE, and that would be Dia de los Muertos.

Catfish - a proud hispanic in his own right - is a Day of the Dead Art-Machine! In fact, he and his cohort in gig posters did an entire gallery show with that as the motif.

So, I do a little reading online and things start to gel together. Details are still foggy, but I now have solid ground to start pacing on.

And then... I run into this link on another blog (warrenellis.com):

http://www.reuters.com/article/idUSTRE70362920110104

Which just ties everything together that much better.

(I just spent the last few minutes cursing out this computer that I'm on to get this link live, so apologies in advance for the fail.)

Anyway, this short little graphic novella that Catfish and I are going to work over the year is taking on a life of it's own. You have to shut up and listen when the universe is telling you things. And you have to say Fuck It to blogspot when it doesn't want to cooperate and move on with your life.

I've got comics to work on,
Chet

One day down.

Until we get the website going so we can start putting up comics, i'm gonna be (and Chet might, too.) doing a sketch a day based on MR! You see, we here at PULP21 industries like to play things fast and loose. By that, I mean, I suck at hitting deadlines and completely misjudged how long it would take me to do the first six pages. That's the biggest problem with learning in a public space, maybe. As opposed to chopping up chapter one and updating as it was complete through the week, the floor managers decided that the debut should just go ahead and be put up in big chunk of Comics next monday. So you have that to look forward (?) to.

In the meantime, the PULP21 PRIMER is finally online at indyplanet to fill your purchasing needs.

PULP21 PRIMER @ indyplanet.

Panel One, 2.

Gonna take the easy way to pimp MR! While i haven't had the time to read two that I'm interested in, trust in fact that it will be discussed here.

In the meantime; check out these two links for some other people's thoughts:

http://webcomicoverlook.com/2010/10/26/ten-things-to-know-about-the-future-of-webcomics/

http://www.comixology.com/articles/412/-Ten-Things-to-Know-About-the-Future-of-Comics

Anyway, I need to get back to the Day Job and working on my next project, which will hopefully be debuting in about a week and a half.

That said; just wait until you guys see what Richard (Basey) has in store for you later this afternoon.

-Chet

taster

The first panel from my comic. A huge thank you to everyone who came by and gave us a shot.

We're almost sold out of our initial print run. The end of the week will see us posting a link for those of you who weren't able to make it to NYCC to buy the Primer online. Come Monday, we'll be posting some preview material for our forthcoming works that are scheduled to launch here - maybe, mwahahaha - at the end of October/beginning of November.

NYCC was an absolute blast. Wall to wall people. And admittedly at times I was getting frustrated with the sea of humans; but had to stop, take a breath - yes, dangerous at a con - and remind myself how awesome that kind of turn out is.

Foremost, the show was an invaluable learning experience. Our table/booth mate Ed Conley of EdContradictory.com has his con presence down and running like a well oiled machine. Awe is not the word. And I can't begin to express my gratitude in allowing us to share his space.

We at Pulp 21 are already planning for the shows we plan to hit in 2011 and how we're going to attack them.

That said, I'm going to keep this brief and will catch back up with all of you this coming weekend.

Stay tuned,
Chet

P.S. I'll go into a little more detail over the remainder of the week; but I'm still settling back into my life back home and gearing up for my next project with a lot of notes, reading, and sketching.

NYCC Part 2

It's official, Chet has invaded New York. The air quality will get a little bit more foul as a piece of Houston has landed in Big City. Friday officially opens the New York Comic Con and Chet is there to represent Pulp 21 with comics and surly smiles. He'll be sharing the space with Ed at table 2491. Remember, 2491. There will be a primer comic of things to come from Chet and Richard.

These are images before Chet and Richard added the text.

Expect more things to come from them in the future. But in the meantime, if you're in New York and attending the Comic Con, make sure you hit up booth 2491. That's TWO FOUR NINTY-ONE. Don't forget that.

And make sure you get some photos and send them to us so we can post them on the site. My name is Casey Ontiveros. I've been asked by Chet and Richard to beat them with The Dirty Tampon of Creativity™. It's to help sharpen them into a fine comic-making machine. A machine that produces stories. They might not be your cup of tea, but I can guarantee you they will be different. It will make you understand that comics can be anything.

I've know Chet and Richard for nearly 7 years now through various message boards. Always with this weird assumption that one day, these two are going to get to tell the stories that have been buzzing in their heads. You can see it buzzing in every line that gets laid down. The one thing that is proof positive about these two is that they are insane. Insanely talented. Look below for what they've done in the past. They will both try new things and mash genres together to form something that is both wonderful is grotesque. It's their lot in life.

Don't let them know that I think that well of them, they may reconsider me helping them out.

They don't like to admit to it, but the ideas that can sprout out of their heads are wonderful(Chet hasn't given me anything yet to look over, but I've known some of the idea ideas that he's had and they're good). But there is something that is a bit of a miss with them and that's why I'm here. To get their asses to move forward. Soon I'll be getting their phone numbers and calling at obscene hours to see where they are at with their stories.

I don't fear reprisal, I have a sister who gives nightmares to pageant mothers and professional leg breakers. I just want to see new stories that there two are going to create. Getting yelled out and threatened with bodily harm with a broken whiskey bottle comes with the job.

This new job is a boon and a bane. You see the story develop as a free form thought being molded into something tangible. That's a beautiful thing. The bane is that I can't tell everything I see about these stories until Chet and Richard are ready to release a chapter.

Seriously, it's a bummer.

I'll be smacking these two into shape over the next few weeks and trying to get the updates running on a more regular basis.

Richard:

<img src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_UYWiFSvJjSU/S3ogFDAIuyI/AAAAAAAAAC4/bRNDNzsynrA/s200/richard05.jpg" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5438694771080608546" style="cursor: pointer; This one involves aliens and the cosmic astronaut-origin of mankind theory. Lots of insane nutso ideas to run with on that.

Should have already started drawing the two scripts that i've got finished, yes. Character designs are not my strong suit, though, so i'm stumbling there.

Kindof got sideswiped by Chet's 'forget POD for now.' But it's kind of freeing with regards to the PILOT SEASON nature of our little empire-in-building. Now there won't be a record of failure if a concept doesn't work. I'd hate for people to dig up BOXCUTTER BETTY or THE UNKNOWN (thanks, Mark Waid. Now I need a new title.) if they're flat concepts.

Anyways, for any people who may be reading this, inspire me. What comics have you been reading and loving? Or reading and loathing but want to talk about? Honestly, that's due to a lot of laziness, particularly - because I have no idea what Richard's finished - on my part.

In fact, Richard and I have only exchanged a text message in the last two weeks and that was kind of a gag idea, that may or may not become something else at some point.

Anyway, as the title suggests I'm just going to ramble on a bit about a few things for the following reasons:

1. The net's been pretty fucking boring on all counts lately. Which is not to say that by writing up this post I'm fixing that, but by running my face and/or making my fingers do some walking I'll get some dormant parts of my brain kicked back into gear.
2. Yeah,... I'm just going to let a few idle thoughts out and see where they might go later on, because with a Day Job and your regular daily life it's kind of hard to stay focused on making shit up.
3. What's a blog without comment, right?

So, I think I'm going to shelve the POD line of thinking for the time being, because that's very much a case of getting the cart before the horse. Instead we should be focusing on webcomics, which don't exactly have too many disimiliar problems from POD for obvious reasons; but still remain totally different animals.

Webcomics are everywhere and a conclusion - albeit possibly uninformed - that I've come to is that most webcomics that aren't updated at least weekly and are humor based tend to do too well. Now, a lot of that could be chalked up to subjective tastes along several lines of thinking. I'd love to see what Zuda's hits are like, but ultimately that doesn't matter either.

And here's why... Nothing's really lost by creating content for the web, other than time. Which, yes, is a valuable commodity too, but depending on what you do with the results - POD? Portfolio samples? - is where the real thinking comes in. Still, there's a lot to be said for getting peoples' eyes on the work. And that will remain something to ponder about for a later date.

On the subject of Just Getting Shit Done: I think I've become notoriously bad about delivering on things promised. Good intentions and all that, as mentioned in a previous post, but there comes a time to put up or shut up, y'know? And I put a lot of thought into that over the weekend.

It's easy to say to yourself that you don't have everything you need to get work done that night. Or you're too tired from the Day Job. Or whatever easy excuse there you concoct. Heh, maybe I spend more time creating reasons not to get shit done rather than actually doing the work.

And, yeah, here I am wasting minutes putting together this post when I could be working on a page or two of script. (Yes, the plan is to actually work on something as soon as I finish this, FYI.)

On the subject of the Comics I Have Planned: One of the biggest problems I've run into with most of the stories I want to do is avoiding fragments that seem to incomplete or tease/promise too much. Finding that fine line between complete short story and teaser for something bigger is much trickier than you might think. You want the compact blocks of information, but also need those atmospheric moments that add that other essential but ambiguous element of character as well.

Which for some weird reason - as I type this - brings me to style in the illustrative mode when concerned with said stories. It's something that's been bugging me much more than often lately. I feel that I have a pretty pedestrian style of art that's functions fairly well, but lacks a lot of character. Too worried about being technically proficient without... well, having fun with it.

I like a myriad of styles that don't exactly mix together too well, which can make for some headaches. Imagine if you will - and these are just the guys running through my mind, today - a style comprised of Paul Pope's expressive and fluid line work, with Lee Bermejo's craggy noir rendering, Jason Pearon's kinetic and animated pen line, Bruce Timm's effective economy of figure and composition, with... oh, I dunno... Juan Jose Ryp's maniacally frenzied detail. It's a little insane, sometimes.

Anyway, I've gone on long enough. However, the interview(s) as promised is being persued. Also, I will most definitely get something graphic in nature up on this thing, because the place is looking kind of dull.

Off to script a page or two;
Chet

Still Alive.

Last week wound up being a wash for me. Through e-mails, Richard seems have made a little progress. I had a family emergency to take care of and that just through a wrench into everything.

However, I still had a little down time and honestly didn't really push myself to at least whittle away at anything. Which is, obviously a bad habit I need to expel.

Matt Fraction was allowed a Q&A thread at Warren Ellis' Whitechapel thread last week, and he had some interesting things to say about what I mention above. I'm going to paraphrase horribly, but the basic point he made to and for aspiring creators is to burn through the work in spite of everything else. Especially, if you find yourself being too critical of your work.

And that's been a problem for me for well over a decade now. I've made bullshit proclamations about getting something done, and always have the best intentions but always manage to cut myself short because I hate what I'm producing.

What is it about most creative types being overly-critical about what they do?

Even well established professionals mention how they refuse to look at what they've done in the past. Even the past three months. Makes me wonder how you ever really learn from your mistakes. Or maybe they make a passing glance at they've made to pick a few things up, but deny themselves the opportunity to dwell.

Anyway, burn through the work. Just get it done.

With that said, I've got some additional stuff to do today to further help with said family emergency, and then I'm going to fit some more time in to finish this first script.

Also, Richard and I proud to announce that we are now cross posting at:

http://www.yourmomsbasement.com

And more specifically:

http://yourmomsbasement.com/pulp21/

With the coming week, I plan to get back to those interviews and other things mentioned before, plus some art -- because what's a blog about comics without some art, right?

Thanks for watching,
Chet

Truth in Advertising.

Many, many moons ago, when Chet and I were running (into the ground...) the original Pulp21.com (itself a bastard child of workingtitlecomics.com) we came across the idea to follow through on the same mistake that every startup publisher craving attention does: A shared universe story.

Ours was a little different from many in the sense that we were establishing an ending point and the entire line was to get us there. Whether it was long form comics or short form 'mini-series' they were all going to connect at the final dot. One of my two contributions played on the theories of David Icke. Crackpot that he is, some of his reptillian-theocracy NWO ideas are fairly entertaining and make for a decent starting point for things. I liked some of what I came up with for the idea, combining with Icke's theories(in what i'm already certain is no original idea, so no need to reaffirm, thankew) some of the works of William Blake.

At any rate, I may go ahead and massage some of what i'd come up with into a new concept. The POD comics scene is a weird beast not too dissimilar from it's photocopy DIY sibling(the mini-comic?). In fact, the use of color and additional computer trickery is probably the only thing that really separates the two, aside from the obvious "publishing plan."

In honesty, it reminded me of some of my disappointment in Artist's Alley from Chicago a few years back. It's more than evident that everyone doing this is more than dedicated to what they're doing, but I really wish more thought would go into the presentation, as shallow as that may sound.

I know I'm verging on Asshole Territory with this line of thinking, but if I don't say it someone else will. (Not that that's a bad thing.)

It got us thinking about an alternative to the current POD model. A site that would be selective about the material it would carry, in the hopes of some kind of quality control.

Image, which everyone knows works under a radically different model from most other publishers, doesn't just publish everything submitted to them, and it's the Mecca of creator-owned books.

Which also led to: What kind of communities exist for web and POD comics?

Of the few situations that I'm aware of, most of the web and/or POD creators are solely concentrating on selling their own wares, as it should be. But as a community neither has the kind of organization that the fan base for the print material does. Maybe it's too early for both relatively young mediums.

Magcloud.com and Lulu.com both impressed with not only the breadth of work available, but the care put into most of the design per package. And, yes, I'm pretty aware that neither site provides art direction for what they carry, or - more to the point - deals in comics.

And, yeah, those same design sensibilities don't necessarily carry over well into comics, there are still lessons to be learned.

Anyway, that's enough incoherent ramblings and musings for today.

Adios,
Chet

Recovery.

So, the weekend was a wash for work because of the holiday. Tonight, I'm going to finish up page plots for the first - after I decide how I'm going to work in some additional information; and, then, for the remainder of the week I'll wrap up the script. Sunday will see layouts done, and then Monday I'll begin penciling.

I'm currently aiming to finish a 10 to 12 page story in two weeks. Weekdays will be about penciling and inking, with the weekends reserved for color, lettering, and design.

I'll get into more of this as it progresses, obviously; but for now I'm in a rush and need to finish this post with some links of inspiration for this first story:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Doc_Savage

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Shadow

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Metropolis_(film)

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cthulhu_Mythos

Again, appearances can be deceiving;
Chet

Repurpose.

Dropping some sketches today to get some art on this blog. These were originally intended as a pitch for a freelance gig while I was living in Atlanta. While I didn't get the gig, I don't see the point in letting the designs just going to waste either. So, they'll be repurposed for one of my strips, but I'm not entirely sure how yet.

Obviously, these were for some kind of cyber-punk project, but like a friend suggested - maybe I should've stuck closer to the accepted tropes of the sub-genre. Meh, fuck that. That's boring, but maybe why I didn't get the job too. Oh well...

Doing a lot of thinking about scheduling today, as well.

Thanks for looking,
Chet

Monsterfight.

Another playing catch-up post:

When I was little, like most children, I was afraid of monsters. In movies, in comics, in the Weekly World News, it didn't matter where they were I was afraid of them. Unfortunately, I had an uncontrolled and irrational fear of whatever was in the dark until much later then i'm man enough to admit without a little bit of the sour mash to loosen these lips. One day, I picked up a comic, and I can't remember the one, but there was a great line about there aren't any monsters that we don't make up.

Oh, yeah. It's a message that's been all over every bit of popular media as long as media has been popular: But I heard it first from Comics.

(I'm starting to learn to stop saying 'Graphic Novel' and call them exactly what they are. I'll still capitalize it every chance I get.)

Anyways...

Chet's got his Light Brigade thing (and I say 'thing' not in a demeaning manor, but because I have no idea what the hell the project actually is. And i'm excited to see it. You should be too, you know.) and it will probably be more meticulously researched than any 12 page short should. Me? I'm working on putting my fear of monsters into the next generation. And then i'm going to tell them it's okay to bloody your knuckles punching Frankenstein in the mouth or ruin a good pair of Converses kicking Satan's balls into his lower G.I. tract.

There's not much in the way of research, but for inspiration there's the masterful works of Junji Ito (he of Uzumaki and Gyo) with a whole lot of the style of Mike Mignola. Because if there's a man who's better at making Comics about punching monsters, i've yet to read anything he's made.

And then there's wikipedia, bringing the goods with things like this: The Revenant.

Anyways, Thanks for reading.

Richard.

Deep Fried Comics.

Chet fired off the first couple of salvos of our comics revolution, so I figured it's probably time for me to introduce myself and maybe expand upon a little of what we'll be about.

Like Chet said (Or didn't.) we're an online studio looking towards producing the cheapest, dirtiest, pulpiest comics we can put out into the market. Greasy, deep-fried comics. Comics for people who don't exactly think that the pen is mightier than the sword but still know you can use it to jab an eye out.

Or, better yet: For people who know the Chainsaw beats all.

However you want to look at it, that's all besides the point. Which is this: Comics. We fucking love them. We talk alot about making them. We talk too much about making them. So now we're going to talk about it while we make them.

If you've ever sat down and watched Hellraiser or Ichi The Killer and thought "Why can't there be any American comics like this" then you're probably someone we'd like to talk to.

-Richard.

Light Brigade

Game Plan: Richard and I are individually - and in at least one instance, collaboratively - cobbling together 10 to 12 page stories to be posted here once completed and then collected in some POD book.

Anyway, when an idea hits, I like to do a little research to hopefully add weight or maybe even inspire a change in whatever it is that I'm working on. The links below deal with Alfred Tennyson's CHARGE OF THE LIGHT BRIGADE. I haven't read the poem since high school - and have yet to do so again, as of writing this entry; but it isn't the poem itself that I'm actually interested in. I'm looking to pull from the events that inspired said poem and see how they work against or with what I have in mind.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Charge_of_the_Light_Brigade

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Charge_of_the_Light_Brigade_(poem)

http://poetry.eserver.org/light-brigade.html

And out of the links that I'm going to drop, this is probably the least obvious indicator of what's actually going to come about.

Currently, I'm in a pretty good position to start writing scripts. One story is already plotted out page for page. So, tonight scripting will commence, but I'm not entirely sure how I'm going to go about that. I usually try to stick with a full-on script - all actions dictated and dialogue provided, for those that don't know - but I'm considering just scribbling it all down on paper and jumping into layouts. Try to keep the energy and spontaneity alive and well. We'll see.

Okay, I've blabbed enough. Richard should be along shortly to give a shout out.

Thanks for looking,
Chet

Intro.

Hello and welcome to the latest reincarnation of Pulp 21. Some of you reading this may remember the webcomics venue birthed at MillarWorld from over 5 (!) years back.

This go around, partner-in-crime, Richard Basey and I are going to run at this a little differently. Pulp 21 is the two of us - with some friends - producing the kind of comics we'd like to read. For the time being we're keeping it closed off and just concentrating on the projects we have in mind.

We're going to start with the web and plan to branch off elsewhere, like POD printing and (hopefully) legitimate print at some point.

This blog is going to serve as the home for all things originating Pulp 21. We'll post links of research, discussions about work processes, and as things unravel... some actual goddamned comics.

In fact, you should be seeing some stuff from us relatively soon at both the following sites:

http://www.buckshotsundae.com

http://www.yourmomsbasement.com

And if for nothing else, you should just drop by those site, period; because they already house plenty of fine content.

For now though, we just wanted to get the ball rolling.

Hope to see you around;
Chet Presley
